'MAPPING MRS. DALLOWAY'

My entry for the ‘Virginia Woolf and the Hogarth Press Open Exhibition’, based on Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘Mrs Dalloway’, which will be exhibited in November 2016 at Orleans House Gallery.

My illustration depicts the central and peripheral characters as I imagined them, in a series of mini-portraits. Dotted lines move between the portraits to map the connections between each character, whether it’s the complex relationship between Clarissa Dalloway and Peter Walsh, or the fleeting connection between Peter and Lucrezia Warren Smith as they pass each other in Regent’s Park.

The aim of the illustration is to reflect the richness of Virginia Woolf’s writing in ‘Mrs Dalloway’ - in her creation of a vivid, moving, and believable set of characters, as she charts their interconnected lives over one day in London.
